When Elgar wrote his concert overture In the South, one part in particular stood out, the section known as Canto Popolare featuring a solo viola with gentle string and harp accompaniment and what appeared to be an Italian folksong. The tune was entirely of Elgar's own invention and it quickly became a best seller. Elgar arranged it as an extract for various instruments including the piano and the violin as well as this version for small orchestra.
