Following the end of World War 2, Korngold wanted to return to Europe writing music for the concert hall and the stage. To this end he produced his Violin Concerto, his Third String Quartet and a chamber operetta called Die Stumme Serenade, The Silent Serenade. Unfortunately for Korngold, no one was interested in his work any more and The Silent Serenade would remain unperformed until 1951 and then only as a radio performance in a shortened version.
The score contains some wonderful numbers, most of which have remained unknown. One of the finest is Ohne Dich, Silvia's love song from Act 2 which harks back to the style Korngold used in 1920s at the height of his fame. This new arrangement uses Korngold's existing piano reduction and adapts the vocal line so it allows the violin upper registers to be used.
