During her lifetime, Emilie Mayer was described as 'the female Beethoven'.  A prolific composer of symphonies, string quartets, violin sonatas and cello sonatas, she was well known in Europe as a significant creative artist.  Unfortunately as was the case for almost all women composers, she was quickly forgotten after her death.  However, there is a revival of interest in this remarkable woman composer who defied the odds and worked as a professional in a near exclusively male world.

This Nocturne is trpical of her work being a thoughtful dialogue between two instruments rather than an empty showpiece.  It features carefully considered structures alongside imaginate part writing for both instruments.  This new edition corrects the mistakes that were to be found in the original nneteenth century publication.
